Perhaps but I wouldn't be so sure. I also hope that's not the case as the center is extremely important for stability. While these past few years have certainly radicalized many, I also know many people who are less politically-obsessed that are starting to tune out the ideologues and are starting to move back to the center b/c being an ideologue is exhausting. You can only sustain Trump rage for so long, in the long-term it is self-defeating.

In order to help the long-term health of our society, we need to encourage one of two things to happen to help "heal the divide". Either we encourage more and more people that have ran to the edges to come back to the center, or we ride the libertarian train and support decentralization of power so that we can live together peacefully despite strong political disagreements.
