Teachers of reddit, what 'clicked' about a pupil after meeting their parents?

I was only a teacher for a short time, but I had one student who was night and day depending on who was around. In one class he was attentive and generally a decent student. In the other, or when I saw him in the hallway with his friends he projected the "I don't give a shit" attitude. His Dad came in for Parent teacher night and it was obvious from the get go he was a hard working individual. He was wearing Dickies coveralls and had obviously come straight from work. Around his dad he was "yes sir, no sir" very respectful. His dad was a great guy. Asked what his son needed to do to succeed, gave me his cell phone number and asked to be informed of any issues in the future. That was when it really clicked that the kid was wrapped up in the whole paper gangster bullshit that some kid from good families end up gravitating towards to be cool. After that if I ever had a problem with him I would sit him down and talk to him like a man and he would straighten up. Probably not the story you were looking for but it was very interesting to me as a young teacher at the time.
