I've lived in the U.S. for 25 years and I have so much dislike for the U.S. team, but I think it's mainly from the media, especially ESPN, overstating how good their team is, and their self-centered coverage of the team. I mean, it's fine that they cover their team so much since it's the U.S. team, but it's horrible the way ESPN do it.
In 2006, Alexei Lalas said shit like, "the U.S. have just a good a chance of winning the World Cup as any other team, and I'm not bullshitting you." Then when the U.S. played the Czech Republic they actually had the gall to believe that Kasey Keller was the best goalkeeper in the world at the time. Mind you, I don't even think he was best American goalkeeper at the time, Brad Friedel was better but retired internationally. And of course, just a reminder, his opposite number was Petr Cech.
Then last year's World Cup, they kept calling Tim Howard a top 5 goalkeeper in the world. I don't even think he's a top 5 goalkeeper in the Premier League. Mind you, this time, his opposing number was Thibaut Courtois, who a lot of Americans believed was not as good as Tim Howard.
On top of this, ESPN's football coverage has always been shit because they are so self-centered. When Germany played their opening match against Costa Rica in World Cup 2006, all they did was show Torsten Frings' handball against them in World Cup 2002. It was so satisfying to watch Frings hit that screamer in the same match. Then in the middle of another match, they actually showed the fucking team training for no apparent reason and missed a near-goal. When Cristiano Ronaldo tried to get Wayne Rooney sent off in the quarterfinals, the dumbass announcers didn't once state that the two players were on the same club team, which was why the scene was shocking.
I don't know about everyone else, but as an American, I dislike the U.S. national team because of their rose-tinted glasses and ridiculous ego. I'm glad ESPN have gotten some better personalities like Michael Ballack in there, it was totally unwatchable before that.
