Thoughts on Thamel

I went to one for my best friend's bachelor party earlier this summer. Here's what went down.

There were 8 of us, mostly based outside Nepal. So money wasn't really an issue. Why'd I bring money up? Because drinks are ridiculously expensive! A bottle of beer cost 600 rupees, IIRC. A glass of wine was about the same.

As we entered, we were seated in a round table. Within 2 mins, chicks were all over us, literally, sweet talking and shit. This reminded me of a trip to a strip club in Vegas. But within 5 mins, we all had an idea about what was going on. Unlike a strip club, no "lap dances" were offered. Chicks wanted us to order drinks for them. And again, since money wasn't an issue (for some, at least), nobody bothered asking about the price. Drinks kept flowing. Girls would take turns to dance. Not skimpy outfits, mind you - Skirts with stocking was the "skimpiest". Some were pretty cute. I don't recall anybody (inside the restaurant) actually tipping them a la people throwing money at strippers after their performance.

As the night grew darker (we entered the restaurant at around 10:30), closing time came. We split the bill. Some casual flirty talk aside, nothing significant occurred. Apparently, some hammered dude on the other table groped one of the girls. He and his friends started a fight but they were controlled and kicked out within a couple mins.

As the closing time came, girls hurried back towards changing room. That's when reality hit fucking hard. They'd all changed into normal clothes that you'd see a young girl from outside the valley living in Kathmandu would wear. Plain, boring, regular outfits.

It was time for us to leave. The total cost came out to about 37k NRs. It might not seem a whole lot based on conversion rate and what not but some of us felt that was the biggest waste of money (FWIW, I've always felt that 30 bucks for a lap dance to torture yourself is the biggest waste). We had spent 300-400 dollars (based on wherever we lived - Can, Aus, or the US) on nothing.

As we left (we'd booked rooms at a hotel closeby), we noticed that a microbus was parked outside. Apparently, that was meant to drop the girls off.

Later on, one of the buddies shared a striking revelation. The girls worked for commission off drinks! They got 200-300 rupees/drink. No wonder why every single one of them sounded thirsty for wine and beer!

One thing was for sure, my best friend's bachelor party would've been way more fun if we'd taken a trip to Vegas for the same amount. Thankfully, I didn't even take a sip of cheap ass wine they sold out there. One of the buddies ended up puking all over the bathroom and had a terrible hangover next day.
