TIL Joseph Lister, the father of antiseptic medicine, had the idea that surgeons could prevent infecting their patients by washing and disinfecting their hands with carbolic acid before surgery. This idea earned him ridicule—until people started noticing that it did indeed help.

Whenever I try to have a critical analysis of a topic on the internet, most people tell me the following:

You must be great at parties

Have sex

You're crazy

Do you need a hug?

Who hurt you?

And so on and so forth. I can empathize with his ridicule. People are always quick to ostracize beliefs from nobodies and accept grandiose proclamations from media saturated individuals like Elon Musk or other Reddit favorites. I'm sure the ridicule was far worse in Joseph's time because people lacked access to the Internet and couldn't research the practice themselves. History is riddled with individuals whom were left for dead on an intellectual arena of repressive ideologies.
