Tips on yielding at intersections?

A couple more tips about pulling into the intersection for left turns:

  • When you're behind a vehicle who is also making a left turn (and they've pulled forward into the intersection), it's a good idea to pull your car forward no further than the stop line until they've made their turn. This is good practice because often times the car ahead of you will have to wait for the yellow/ red to make their turn, and you will have to wait for the next green light to attempt your turn and pull forward into the intersection... in this situation you'd want to have your car stopped where you would stop as if it were a red light, because there's a good chance you will have to stay put when the light goes red and wait for the next light. Some over-eager drivers don't care to do this, and will instead pull forward over the stop line right behind someone who is already pulled forward into the intersection, and when the first person goes on the yellow/ red, the 2nd car will make the turn right behind them, almost always during a red light.

  • It's okay if you end up making your turn when the light is turning red, in this situation the top priority is safety and not necessarily timing. Sometimes when the light turns yellow, the oncoming traffic will (dangerously) try to speed up to make it through the intersection (when they should be slowing down/ stopping), and other times it's simply bad timing for the opposing traffic when the light turns yellow and they're seemingly too close to stop, but also it's a seemingly late moment to be driving through the intersection. In any case, it's all the same to you, you're only priority is seeing when all the approaching cars are clearly stopping/ stopped, making sure there aren't any other obstacles (like pedestrians), and then making your turn when it's safe.

  • When you're pulled forward waiting for a safe gap to make your left turn, make sure to scan the intersection for other things you need to be aware of. When I first started in these situations I found myself so focused on looking for a safe gap in the oncoming traffic that I would forget to check for pedestrians crossing (mainly the ones who would be crossing the street to your left where you intend to turn towards/ into... and I'd also forget to keep an eye on the light itself to see when it turns yellow. Now whenever I'm pulled forward into the intersection on a green light waiting to make a right turn, I try to cycle my attention between these 3 things: looking for a safe gap in oncoming traffic, checking for obstacles/ pedestrians on the road where I intend to make my turn into, and keeping an eye on the traffic light to see when it turns yellow so I can be better prepared to begin making my turn.
