The Town That Caught Tourette's (2012) - Examines the tics, as well as the rising fear of a possible cover up. The true cause of the illness is still a mystery, but the documentary explores possible causes such as infections, environmental influences, conversion disorder and even Lyme disease.

i agree that personal diagnoses of "hysteria" have been used to oppress women in the past, but we are talking about cases of mass hysteria- similar (not necessarily identical) to what we would call conversion disorder. i.e. widespread outbreaks of shared, undiagnosable, bizarre illnesses, behavior, fits, claims of spiritual possession, etc. we are not talking about a male doctor misunderstanding a single woman's menstruation or menopause.

if you are suggesting that these cases are also apocryphal, i understand and am open to a more factual history. we should approach everything with skepticism, but here is the current wiki for recorded cases of Mass Hysteria

Of these incidents, the following were exclusive to women:

  • Cat nuns (France, Middle Ages)
  • Europe (15th century)
  • Würzburg (1749)
  • Montreal (1894)
  • Tanganyika laughter epidemic (1962)
  • Welsh, Louisiana (1962)
  • Blackburn, England (1965)
  • London (early 1970s)
  • Malaysia (1970s–1980s)
  • West Bank fainting epidemic (1983)
  • North Carolina (2002)
  • Mexico City (2007)
  • Vinton, Virginia (2007)
  • Afghanistan (2009–)
  • Brunei (2010)
  • LeRoy, New York (2011–12)

The only one i can find exclusive to men is San Diego (1988) case. the rest seem to be mixed sex/gender, or majority female. i'm not suggesting these are accurate, it's just simply what i read.
