Treating people with mild autism like saints for doing the bare minimum is insulting.

I do get your point, and it is insulting to the high functioning.

However, you can't automatically guess what level someone is on and if all they are faced with is "hey, that individual has autism" then they likely don't know how to react and try to call back on support in the only way they know how.

They are trying to show compassion for something they know nothing about. I understand the frustration but being bitter about someone trying to be compassionate and inclusive to someone is kind of rude. There are certain levels of the spectrum that aren't as high functioning and would love that kindness.

If you're mild presenting then the only way anyone knows is because you or someone close to you has made it known. Again, in that case they don't get how to react and being crappy because they're nice and trying to be encouraging is kind of asshole behavior. How are they supposed to know your level of function and how exactly to behave?
