USA / France - American citizen, living in France. I lost my passport whilst seeing family "abroad" in the US. How fucked am I?

I have that handled I believe. My flight will not make its connection so I can rebook for free. I'm going to try to make it sound more inconvenient than it is ("I have to rearrange so many things now...") and see if they can give me a couple days to rebook. The flight was also overbooked and they were offering vouchers to drop off the flight, so I may even come out on top, although I'm not positive they'll still offer vouchers by the time I arrive to Chicago (waited two hours on the phone before I gave up).

I managed to book an appointment tomorrow with the passport agency in Chicago so I may have luck. I just hope I can obtain the passport without my birth certificate.
