I’ve lived in San Diego for more than 20 years and the homeless have never bothered me. Why are some people here scared of them? (serious). To me, they’re a reminder of how messed up America still is and why we need to be politically active

One exposed himself to my neighbor’s kids and then smoked meth in my driveway started yelling about killing someone. Shit’s WAY different now. I don’t even recognize most of the homeless in my neighborhood anymore. I used to set out my aluminum and bottles so someone could go cash them in. If I do that now, the bag gets ripped apart, left there, and they might not even take anything. Some are so deep in psychosis from whatever the fuck is in the meth now.

On my jog this morning I saw a homeless guy just standing there with a sharp piece of a broken mirror. Not in a super threatening way, but I’m not going anywhere near this person. He’s holding something that could be used as a deadly weapon. I don’t remember any of this being so common.

Deal with the drug problem like the health issue that it and you’ve dealt with a big chunk of what is driving these encounters. Only then can you actually start working on the rest of the root issues.
