[VENT] Please, for the dogs sake, DO NOT get a dog if you can't pay for it.

Just because a person says they can't afford something doesn't mean they don't have the money for it. Hell no, I can't afford $800 for a dog. That's wildly outside my budget considering I can pick up a rescue for $150 - $250.

Paying a trainer absolutely is NOT a requirement for many pooches. That's totally doable by the pet owner. Sure, there are special circumstances that may necessitate a trainer, but to say everyone needs to hire a trainer is ridiculous.

There are a lot of expenses, no doubt. But something like food, for instance. I get my dog Earthborn, which is generally considered one of the better brands. He's only about 30lbs. A large bag costs me less than 50 bucks and lasts months. I get him a 12 pack of canned food, and I scoop about a third into his bowl each day so that's about a month worth of dog food for $20 (Natural Balance). I buy him toys, but I am frugal. I find good, quality toys at a reasonable price. I don't need to spend $150 on toys. He gets more joy out of an old tennis ball than he does an overpriced squeaky toy.

Yeah, there are vet fees and they can add up, especially the regular flea & tick treatment. Since I'm not loaded, and I don't have the ability to drop thousands on sudden notice I pay for doggie insurance. $30 a month. Not a requirement, but it allows me to rest comfortably knowing if my pup gets sick I'm not going to dip into savings.

As for a pet sitter, again, that's an unnecessary expense. Live alone? Get an adolescent dog that can handle some alone time. There are plenty looking for homes. My girlfriend and I were fortunate in that one of us was always available for our dog until.
