In vert stack, do you clear out on the open side or the break side?

There are no steadfast rules to running an offense in this game — as long as everyone is on the same page — so it all depends on your team's offensive goals.

What you're describing is what I've heard called a 7 cut: cutting to the open side, moving in front of the stack and clearing break. What the 7 cut does is give the thrower a small window to hit you after you're moving across the front of the stack and to the break. The reason that window exists is because the majority of defenders slow down after preventing the throw to the open-side in cut and wait to react to the cutter's new path. That leaves a moment to get an IO or flat flick to the break side (if they're forcing flick).

I don't like encouraging everyone to always clear break for one simple reason: It's clogging the exact same space I want the disc to be in. In my ideal world, we move the disc up the field by dumping, swinging, then throwing continuation break throws until the defense can readjust. Watch Rhino play if you want to see some of my ideal offense.

Then again, some of the most open space on the field is where a player just was.

I could go on, but the best answer is that it depends. If your team is crap and can't throw break throws or dumps, then yes, clear break. But if your team knows what they're doing, those clearing cuts could really detract from some really effective throws. Watch Chain play sometime and watch how they choose to clear. I think Chain is one of the best teams at clearing and creating space on offense. Their clearing cuts are always respected as deep cuts because of the reputation Chain has: "Chicks dig the long ball."

So there's some more good advice — Don't just clear, cut deep. I think as long as you are booking it deep and not clogging the space your offense wants to throw into, you're making a good clearing cut.
