A warm Antarctica

Dude yes and no, you are looking at things in a very us centric way. First of all I think very few people outside the US would consider what happened to the native Americans colonization (every territory the US has had control over has previously been a European colony, the exception was Hawaii but in that case there had been a coup who identified with their US heritage. The view most people have is that the treatment of native Americans was a genocide by the US of a group in the US with second class status. Now the other thing is that in the US, we have had an officially anti imperialist stance since like 1800 with the Monroe doctrine, even when we had colonies ourselves we were officially denouncing colonialism. I think as the US we should probably do more to apologize for colonialism but I think you have to keep in mind the global context... if you ever check out spanish Wikipedia, for instance, you will find that the articles literally there say that the stuff about the Spanish being brutal is a complete myth and actually the Spanish were completely humanitarian. Keep in mind that like anyone who is a baby boomer was born in the age of imperialism, and most of these empires didn’t officially end until like the 90s. The colonies often still exist but they are self governing now, there’s really nothing wrong with that of course. The big problem with colonialism is that the government, although often - not always - but often well intentioned, was predicated on the belief that the people there were incapable of governing themselves and thus had an extreme bureaucracy that micromanaged everything. For some cases this was good, there was an increase infrastructure and it also helped the culinary arts through fusion, but there were also some really shocking things, for instance in Algeria you had the literacy rate fall extremely.

It also led to the importation of racism throughout the world. Racism is a really new idea and it had a really limited scope at first, for instance, at first if you were a white person and you went to Africa, it wouldn’t have been unheard of you just blending in and adapting to the local culture, I mean skin color was basically the same thing as hair color, people noticed and talked about it but it was really just a physical feature and not an identity. You would have nether have had the racial issues you have no where basically white Africans are fleeing because of racial discrimination - plus of course there is the racial discrimination against blacks in Africa, for instance their are towns in South Africa which only let white people live. It’s pretty disgusting. I reccomend reading more on ask historians. Also to state something you probably realize but other people don’t... you can love a culture or a country while recognizing they did Terrible things, Also patriotism is loving the people who live in a country, regardless of their ancestry and how they look. Sorry for the rant hope you don’t mind, I know I’m no Shakespeare and typing on my phone doesn’t help lol
