Weekly /r/Statistics Discussion - What problems, research, or projects have you been working on? - September 18, 2019

It depends, will you learn a language?

If you come out knowing C++, FORTRAN, or Python you definitely will be learning a skill certain programs would love to utilize and would benefit your overall career. Will it immediately get you admitted or help in the coursework? Not as likely. Would it be a boon to doing research? Definitely possible.

The minor could arguably be all the real comp sci education you’d need, you’d then want to develop into a language like R or Python if you want to keep up with the applied world. If you do more applied math academia than being more into C++/FORTRAN/Python will help, though R does seem to be growing more too.

It’s worth pointing out that a lot of times stats packages in stuff like R and Python are actually in C++ or FORTRAN behind the scenes for efficiency.
