Depends on the company, the team, and usually the talent of the person. I am good enough and talented enough to get away with less than 40 hours a week and no one is going to question me. I have been asked to slow down. I just really like what I do. I don't expect others to work the same. Some groups will expect their top talent to put in crazy hours because one top engineer is at least as good as 4 to 10 regular engineers. Problem is, if you pass off your good engineer, you are left with a team of engineers that aren't as good. It is a tradeoff. If you are struggling, and you are not very productive, you are still expected to pull your weight. Many people confuse the subpar performing person who is asked to work 60 hours to get a project done with the top engineer who can't get enough and works 60 hours a week. And much like the company trying to get every ounce of work out of you... If you are good, and you work for a top company, you won't be complaining about compensation. They take care of their people.
