What are your opinions on "Political Correctness"?

I like the idea behind it (ie: don't be offensive), but I guess the context plays a huge part in determining its efficacy.

My main interaction with it has been in liberal universities at both the undergrad and graduate levels. There, it was being used by privileged people with savior complexes being self-righteous and it was toxic. I like to think that the goal of being PC was to empower minorities and women in these settings and in my experience it fails to do that more often than it helps. For instance, I recently saw a woman trying to talk about her experiences and the experiences of people in her circumstances, but she got shot down for using the wrong acronym (by a privileged white male), and she was visibly alienated and said nothing during the rest of the discussion. I also think that on campuses it crosses the line into becoming patronizing, where professors are so afraid of tokenizing or offending minority students that they end up silencing their voices altogether. There has to be a baseline of human decency and politeness, but beyond that, in my experience, it stops being altruistic and starts being a contest to show who is more liberal or more "woke." Also, if my classmates find this, I will probably be called a bigot and have to face a firing squad.
