What does Reddit think of your university/college?

None of what I said about college reflects what I really think. It was just a good example of trolling and seeing who wants to get into unnecessary online arguments about it. Because that's all Redditors do when the subject comes up. The reality is that college is a good choice for some people and not others. But if a person takes out $60,000 in loans and the complains about having to pay it back, well then I have no sympathy there. Gambling on a return on investment for education is still gambling. There isn't anyone else responsible for that debt other than those who agreed to it. It's not about fighting an unjust or corrupt system but a harsh less for those who did not make a wise choice. Any economy can take a downturn and hurt the job market, as we are in now. Has nothing to do with student loans and how much universities want to charge. If a person can't get a job right out of college, it's not some conspiracy. Either they haven't learned how to interview well, they lack skills, motivation or some other affliction. Or maybe they need to move because there just aren't enough jobs in the area. It's complicated. Complaining about student loans isn't going to fix that. They took a gamble and expected a higher paying job. They made mistakes in their calculations and now they have a large amount of debt that is difficult to repay. Why should I have sympathy for that?

Did I go to college? No. My single mom couldn't afford it and I decided I didn't want 30 years of debt. So I got a job. Started as the low man on the totem pole and worked a lot of nights and weekends studying to improve my career and it worked. It was the right choice for me. I wasn't trying to be a doctor or lawyer or supreme court justice. For anyone else, you have to remember that choosing a career path is a gamble too. Like the kid who dreams of being a pro basketball player but loses their legs in a car accident. Dreams can get altered. We suffer defeat and learn to pick ourselves up and figure out a new way to deal with it. That basketball player decides to become an accountant instead. Which is all fine and dandy except for those who made an economic bet via student loans. They bet that if they got the education, the money would come rolling in and they wouldn't have trouble re-paying those loans. And it turns out they were wrong. Either their job market got saturated, they were unable to be proficient in their intended career, or the economy took a tumble. Whatever the reason, it's time for them to stop licking their wounds and start doing what is necessary. Doesn't make the debt go away but such is the fate of those who gamble. The system isn't broken. People just feel that they are entitled to something even if they lost. This is what happens when you give away too many "participant" ribbons and consolation prizes.

tl;dr: Don't take out a student loan unless you fully realize how much money you are gambling away.
