What If We Just Gave Poor People a Basic Income for Life? That’s What We’re About to Test.

We can already put so much food on the table that all of us would become obese and die of heart disease.

The extra that we are producing gets washed in the economy and shows up as $50,000,000 yachts and European summer mansions for the rich.

What is happening is that the poor working class is creating more now than ever, but since wages have never gone up for this class, they can still only buy enough to pay for 1 modest house and 1 modest car on average.

If I, as a working person, was able to keep all of the value I contributed to the economy for the 31 years I was employed full time, instead of much of it being harnessed and reaped by my employer then I could have already provided for myself until long after the day I die.

But since I hurt my back last year and am now unemployed, and therefore useless, everyone looks at me today as a moocher and lazy even though nothing could be further from the truth.

I have, out of desperation, applied for welfare. Let me tell you, if you think standing in line at the DMV for your driver license is a pain in the ass, multiply that by 100, and throw in a proctology exam while you're at it. And the amount that you get (assuming you can) is so pathetic you wonder how anyone really survives when it's all they've got.

$190 a month is all I get. And it has already been decided what I can spend money on. Nevermind I'd like to buy soap or put gas in the car, I can only buy certain things at the grocery store. Counting trips to the store, time spent shopping, time spent cooking, time spent cleaning the dishes, it really isn't a help. When I worked I could spend 5 minutes getting a meal for $7 at a drive through. The time saved made the increased cost of eating out completely worth it. Now I spend my time buried in the inefficient labor of cooking for one. Economies of scale apply here, and cooking for 1 person just isn't worth it but if an industrial operation like a restaurant is making food for me, the time cost to prepare a meal per person is much lower. But as the welfare system would have it, it almost seems like they are trying to punish me as much as help me for my situation, as if I chose somehow to have two herniated disks and a rotated SI joint + sciatica.
