What kind of degree do you have?

BA Linguistics/MA TESOL. I had no idea as an undergrad that I'd end up as a language teacher, and chose my major based on interest. (Not that anyone cares about minors, but I minored in Classical Lit as well, and I put that on my CV in an effort to hit all the bases if I can.) More than half of the people in my Masters program had non-Linguistics backgrounds and did just fine, in the program and in their careers since. I have heard of a few countries requiring BAs to be in certain subjects like Lit or Linguistics, but who knows how that could change in the future and it definitely doesn't seem worth planning around. As far as I know, most countries just want a BA in any subject.
I'd echo other people's advice to choose your degree subject based on your interest. My focus has always been language, and I do find my educational background really helpful now (I teach at the uni level), but there are a lot of other paths that lead to this career as well. I think keeping your options open as much as possible is important while you're still figuring out what you want to do.
