What they mean when they say "started from the bottom".

Before it was an electric car company, the thing everybody on the internet knew about Tesla was that many of the inventions we attribute to Edison were actually invented by Nikola Tesla. That Edison basically ran a patent mill that was grabbing up all the low-hanging fruit of the new electrical power technology. And that people like Tesla worked long hours for low wages to develop these inventions and Edison took the patent rights for himself and used it for his own fortune and self-promotion.

So when Tesla the car company became a thing, it was like old Nikola was finally getting the name recognition he deserved.

And now Elon Musk runs Tesla as a patent mill, grabbing up all the low-hanging fruit of the new electric car technology, and other people whose names we don't know work long hours to develop patentable inventions which Elon Musk then uses for his own enrichment and self-promotion.

The cycle of exploitation continues.
