What might be the next "big thing" in gaming business models after Free to Play?

"Participation Games" could be another good direction.

There're always core players and casual players, and we should recognize that most of the casual players would never reach the skill level of the core/pro players.

But that fact doesn't stop casual players loving watching pro players playing and they even want to donate money to interact with the pros (like twitch).

So the solution is to enable casual players to participate in a same game with pros but with low responsibility.

For example, they could play as the towers/mobs in the MOBA, or direct a bunch of zombies in L4D, or vote to decide where to drop a crate in PUBG, or play as a sponser audience like in the movie hunger games.
