What is the nicest thing anyone has ever given you?

I always wanted to be independent. I'm the oldest one of 3 children, destined to set the example. My parents are doctors so I grew up a bit more "privileged" than others, although my parents never spoiled me rotten, I never lacked of things I needed, and I was always very grateful for that.

That being said, I wanted to prove to myself and to my parents that I could live my life without their monetary help. My parents were divorced so I lived with my mother. Because of certain situations my mom kicked me out of the house when I was 20 yrs old. My friend at the time took me in, so I got a job while being a full time student, I decided to get a student loan to finish my studies because, as a still somewhat immature young adult, I didn't want my parents to have any control over me. For me to do that I had to cut all monetary ties to them.

I struggled so much, at one time I was so broke I started losing weight because of lack of food. I was too proud to ask for their help, I had to ask my cousin for 50 bucks just to get through the next 2 weeks. But after years of so much sacrifice, 12 hr shifts, missed youth, broken hearts, I got my BA degree, MBA degree, post graduate certificate and by the time I was 27 I got to buy an apartment all on my own.

My mom making that decision so many years ago is the nicest thing anyone has done, she made me appreciate hard work and struggle and that we gotta learn how to love our lives on our own, because we never know what's gonna happen next. She herself came from nothing and orphaned by the time she was 8 she had to go through hell and back to get to where she is. She didn't have shortcuts and knew that life out there was hard. I wanted to be as strong as she was. She never likes to admit she did that, that she "threw" me out, but I wish she could acknowledge that the reason she is so proud of me is because of that. For me, the learning experience was priceless.

Tl;Dr - grew up privileged, mom kicked me out of house as young adult, had to cut ties and struggle in the real world, nicest thing she has ever done was teaching me how to live on my own. She is so proud of me and my accomplishments that I wouldn't trade it for the world.
