What is NOT a fun fact?

First of all I 100% agree that if people actively shot firearms for the same amount of time that people drive there would be more firearm related accidents than there are. I don't think that is even debatable.

But my comment was in reply to the idea that people aren't respecting the danger of firearms or taking the necessary precautions to prevent accidents. Obviously there are instances where this is true but it is a tiny fraction of firearm owners. You don't have 300 million firearms with 500 accidental deaths related to firearms if there is a widespread trend of underestimating the danger of firearms.

In your first comment here you said:

Cars, boats and motorcycles are also harder to operate than a gun. I doubt my toddler could even turn one on, but she's have no problem accidentally pulling a trigger.

Toddlers would have a hard time accidentally pulling the trigger of a gun that is in use. A firearm doesn't cease to be dangerous when you are done firing it. It ceases to become dangerous when you lock it away/secure it. So while it is true that that there are more vehicle deaths than accidental firearm deaths in part because of the frequency/total time of use, it doesn't paint an accurate picture of how safe people are being with firearms to only look at the time they spend firing it.

While I disagree that you can conclude that people who say something like "look at my new toy" have a lackadaisical approach to gun safety, I think we are in agreement that proper gun safety is important. I just don't think you can point to guns as being at all unique in this aspect. Car accidents are caused at least some of the time by people disrespecting the dangers driving. Same with firearm accidents, and same with accidents of virtually any other nature.
