What opinion of yours makes you an asshole?

My grandmother passed away a few years ago after battling Alzheimers for about 8 years. I love and miss her. This is not a sad post though.

I know only a handful of things about that woman. She had 6 husbands. She loved gaudy jewelry and wearing fancy ballroom-esque attire as everyday clothing. She was friendly and funny and a great person. SHE WAS A SHITTY DRIVER.

The first accident I was ever in was on the front bench seat of a 70's model pickup she was driving. I was probably 4 or 5 years old. She went off the (very straight and unoccupied) road, through a ditch, and into a fence. She was involved in more accidents than anyone I know. She once over-corrected causing her SUV to roll 5 times, then got out and stood there, hands on hips, looking at the car as though it had done something wrong. (There is a series of images from a traffic camera).

There was a running joke that my dad became a police officer only to get her out of tickets and respond to her accidents.

This only came about as she aged though. When she was married to her first husband they would take their car out to the drag strip and she would post better times than him frequently. They were very into hot rod and automotive culture and she was, by all accounts, a great driver.

My wife's grandmother was recently declared legally blind and told not to drive, this infuriated her. She had been putting off doctors visits for her vision for years because she knew what the outcome would be, but she didn't want to stop going to bingo and poker. For at least 10 years (that's as long as I've known her) she has been a terrifying person to be in the car with. You can call out obvious hazards (or she would hit them) and her response would be either "I saw it" or "I knew that was there".

Point is, I fully agree with this. It is incredibly hazardous to the general population and is fully solvable. If they retake the test and pass, great, good for you gramps, no worries. If they fail, they don't drive and the roads are safer for everyone.
