What pisses you off about new movies these days?

I want to preface this by saying I am not anti progress.

I believe trans men are men, trans women are women. I believe people of colour being represented is a good thing. I'm about as left leaning as you can be.

Now, here's my gripe. A lot of films/tv shows these days throw their message in your face.

What used to be explored through subtle themes and subtext is now exposited to you in clunky and lazy dialogue, as opposed to showing you through the events of the film and actions of the character.

And what really annoys me about this is that this is lauded by critics as brave, as saying anything to the contrary will result in being called a bigot.

I guess my point boils down to "show don't tell".

It's supposed to be an art form capable of challenging my views by showing me these things, if I wanted stats and figures thrown at me I'd read an article or watch a TED talk, and I'm willing to bet the actual bigots would actually question their beliefs more if they didn't feel like they were being lectured.
