What really does it mean to criticize a film for what it is?

Not by much, people who run to Director Cut because there were more pointless scenes are people who don't seem to understand that ever single subplot doesn't fit together with other subplots, this movie doesn't work and no matter how many scenes you add to it it still won't work, editing in Directors cut is just as bad, movie is filled with pointless dream sequences, good editing would be if someone would cut that pointless shit out.

nobody knows exactly how to do certain things if he hasn't tried it before

ye, Nolan should try making a comedy, we just won't know if he can do it until he does.

Let's say production design, how was it badly handled in this case?

who cares? plot of movie isn't working on all basic levels, characters aren't working, acting is ridiculous, dialogue is stupid, it's like stitched together misshapen thing, this drags down all the movie, great, you got production design right, bravo, now get core of movie right, I am not giving director any credit for work of real artists that designed all costumes, composed music, took care of set design and everything else, his work is to oversee how movie is coming together and direct actors, he failed at that.

and what genre does it belong to

garbage action movies, genre Snyder excels those, you really thing that pile of trash belongs in it's own category or there is some question to where it fits? this is a mainstream movie that masturbates to slow motion stupid action.
