What’s something that was supposed to be the “Next Big Thing” but absolutely flopped?

It's had a significant influence on current transportation in cities. The issue was that the Segway was too early (there were some other issues with it [cost and lack of "coolness"] but it was more of a timing issue like grocery deliveries in the late 1990s -- look at where we are with those now). Electric scooters and bikes are now quite ubiquitous and becoming even more so in many places. The university I work at (and many others) have reduced where cars can go on campuses. That's about safety but they are also encouraging more electric scooter use (rather than cars).

The Segway flopped but it was still an important driver of transportation now.
