What’s your “Sir, this is a Wendy’s” moment?

We used to have a solar power company with a somewhat generic name. Many an hour has been spent on finding installation details of people insisting we really were the solar company that did their installation. We've had people (including local government people) assume we were the governing body for solar in our state and they would call in to complain about anything and everything.

And so one day I pick up the phone and on the other end is a person claiming we did their installation. There's no chill. We apparently have been out to their place multiple times to fix issues and only made things worse every time.

I try to find their installation details in our system, but can't find anything and I ask them to send a copy of their contract.

The person lays into me. Accusing us of trying to pull shit. They don't have the contract anymore as the installation was done several years ago (still within normal warranty periods though).

I apologise and explain that maybe they have the wrong company. They're not having it. We clearly don't know who we're dealing with and we won't get away with this.

A couple of days later the same person calls again. Lays into our service rep and asks for company details because they're suing us. As per policy, the second legal threats come up, we seize all further communication. Our service rep explains that and offers to transfer to me. Person hangs up.

A couple of weeks later we receive a letter and phone call from consumer affairs. We've been reported and due to the amount involved there's going to be a hearing. We explain once more that we think they have the wrong company. Nope, person insists we did the installation. Filled in the form with our exact details etc, swearing we had done the work.

Long story short. We end up at the hearing. Suited and lawyered up. The installation wasn't done by us. The company that did the installation had gone under at some point during the warranty repairs and as such the phone number had stopped working. Our company name was actually quite different from theirs, but the person apparently had just searched for solar companies until they recognised a name.

This whole thing came out after the person running the hearing asked the person to provide bank statements showing the payment made to us.

We acually ended up feeling sad for the guy more than anything. He had overpaid and got a really shit experience, and he was very apologetic (and embarrased) when he realised his mistake. We offered to fix the issues for him at a discounted rate with the idea that it would help him out and it would cover our legal fees, which he agreed to.
