What is a silly lie you once told, and you are in so deep that you have no other choice but to uphold it?

I really needed to print my final paper for a class in undergrad and couldn’t find my ID (which had printer funds). The only free printer on campus was at Hillel and it was only supposed to be for Jewish students. I went in there, printed my paper, and left.

A few days later a lot of Jewish kids started saying stuff like “wow, I didn’t know you were jewish, why haven’t I seen you at X or Y!?” I was too embarrassed to tell them I just needed to use the printer so I went along with the farce. Soon, most of my friends were Jewish and were all members of Hillel. I was introduced as my name followed by “and she’s Jewish!!!” This lie from freshman year followed me throughout undergrad. My mom even got involved at one point when she met one of my Jewish friends and said SHE was Jewish. She then told her boss she was Jewish for some reason and now everyone thinks she is Jewish. She even talked about hosting her own Seder. This really grew out of control.

I ended up joining Hillel and got invited to a trip to Israel sponsored by my school (I didn’t go). My lowest point was dating a Jewish kid who told me he promised his dead grandmother he would never date a gentile. I even had a fake theme for my Bat Mitzvah and I now know SO MUCH about Judaism. I’m sort of mad I’m not actually Jewish.
