What is the the Batman 'killing' joke and why is there such a fuss?

It's a problem I don't fully understand. Every time it comes up though, it makes me happy. It makes me happy because it must mean that rape and sexual assault cases are occurring much less frequently than at any point in human history. These people come along to say explicitly that it doesn't need talking about any more in fiction because of how truly seldom it happens in real life, which is great.

I mean, if we as a society agree to never even imply during fiction that sexual assault or rape could possibly happen, the problems surrounding it should evaporate!

All of that was sarcasm by the way, you can always tell that it's children, and not actual fans that write crap like that. Fucking casuals. Comics have been tackling more mature themes than most other forms of media for decades. There's a Gotham comic I read not too terribly long ago that had a lesbian cop who was being stalked by Zasz as one of the main characters. The subplot was about how she had to hide her sexual orientation from her extremely religious family, and it approached the situation in a way that really showcased her humanity.

Because while we'd all like to believe that there aren't people out there who are ashamed or terrified to come out to their deeply religious parents, they do exist. Problems like that, while uncomfortable, happen to real people.

People forget so quickly. Peter Parker, the original and best known SpiderMan, was raped or molested when he was a kid in the comics, and that was ran decades ago.

Comics are meant for adults, they oftentimes don't feel the need to sugar coat things as much as other forms of media, and that's a good thing. Bad things happen in the world, and sometimes good can come of it. Sometimes people can be victims like Barbara was in The Killing Joke, but we all know that's only the beginning of her story. She showed victims everywhere the obstacles they could overcome to be a hero.

So great, Batgirl got whitewashed and made more palatable. Now she can be a bubbly super hero like all the others, and hopefully we can see another Oracle in another capacity to be an inspiration to the people who need her more.
