When I was 20 I briefly dated a girl in my statistics class, I'll just refer to her as Jane. Jane had asked me to help her with setting up her nephew's birthday party at the local rec center, so I picked her up that weekend and we stopped at off Party City to get decorations. After shopping for about 45 minutes, we got back to the car and realized that the headlights had been left on and the battery was dead. Jane suggested that we ask someone in the shopping center if they had jumper cables and could help us out. I told her no way (my dad often beats me with jumper cables) and I told her we'd have to just take the bus instead. Jane didn't like this idea, as we had two heavy bags and the rec center was pretty far away, but I insisted, and I grabbed the bags and began walking towards the bus stop. Jane followed, but continued to suggest asking around for jumper cables. I tried to keep things positive and told her it was no problem at all, hoping she'd just drop it, but Jane was getting pretty upset, and she soon demanded that we go back and try to get the car jump started. It was at that point that my memory of the situation is unclear. According to her, I suddenly screamed, pushed her, and then began running down the street with my arms flailing, moaning loudly like someone in the midst of a bad dream. I don't remember any of this, but I do remember arriving at my house on foot and Jane wasn't with me. My therapist refers to this incident as an "acute stress reaction" but she thinks it also might have been a flat out nervous breakdown. Needless to say, Jane and I did not continue dating, and my car remained in the Party City parking lot for the next two weeks until it got towed.
