What's the healthiest artificial sweetener that's cheap?

also, an earlier commenter had more journal studies: Not OP, and not taking a side on the debate as a cursory search seems to indicate a lot of different evidence for different things. This study [1] is the one I could find which poses the hypothesis: "Inconsistent coupling between sweet taste and caloric content can lead to compensatory overeating and positive energy balance." They don't answer this question, but pose it in the context of reviewing other literature. Looking at other articles that cite this one might be interesting. This is what I could find which seems closest to what our OP suggested.

This study [2] talks about sweeteners and addiction. A quick read through doesn't seem to suggest anything definitive, but, trying to provide what I found.

This is not at all an area I know a lot about, and as I mentioned, I primarily just tried to do some searches because I was interesting in OP's points. However, as I also mentioned, a quick search seems to indicate to me that there's a lot of research researching quite a few different outcomes, which may also be important. I stumbled upon something that said that artificial sweeteners are sometimes useful for losing weight, but that doesn't say anything about if there are negative outcomes in other areas, e.g., I also stumbled upon something mentioning that these artificial sweeteners may have a negative effect on gut flora (though I believe this was a rat study?). In short, there's a lot out there and it's hard to make sense of all of it, as meta-reviews also tend to focus on studies focusing all on one outcome, which makes sense of course, but doesn't do much in describing more broadly whether or not these things are "good" or "bad" if we can even make such claims.
