What's something horrible you've witnessed as a child but did not completely understand, only to discover later in life how horrible it really was?

My mom ran a daycare when my brother and I were younger. She would take care of us and some other children throughout the day and she had a big green van that was once an airport shuttle van that she would drive us all around in around town. We went to a Popeye's chicken restaurant one day and while she was making the order at the drive-thru, a man asked her for some food. She ordered his food and proceeded to the window. The man looked very much homeless, battered clothing, stuff in his beard and hair, and just an overall stereotypical demeanor. While she was ordering, he was behind the window and he was shaking up and down with his hand on his chest, his eyes were going up and down the entire time he did this. Us being kids, we thought it was funny and laughed. The windows were tinted so he likely didn't see us even if he wasn't this way. I only later realized that this guy was high on some type of drug(s). It's incredibly sad and we were just kids who thought someone was being a clown.
