When You Treat Costco Like a Rental Facility

Sadly I'm a bit guilty of this..

My mother was in her last days of suffering from breast cancer. All possible treatments had been exhausted and she was now in her "make her comfortable" stage. She spent most of her time in bed in her room, where she had a small 13" CRT/VCR TV combo that was well past its prime. The screen was worn out due to burn in and it was hard to see much of anything, and I knew she was upset that it was harder for her to watch her sports at night (which she loved.)

Knowing that she didn't have much time left I went to Costco and bought the cheapest HDTV they had. It wasn't much, a 19" Vizio 720p LCD TV (this was back in 2008) but it was a huge improvement over what she had. When I set it up for her I could tell she was genuinely happy that she had a better screen to watch her beloved Mets with.

About a month later she ended up passing and I brought the TV back. In my mind I was just going to say "We didn't like it" but instead when asked "Why are you returning it" I blurted out, "The person I bought it for died." The clerk looked sad after I said that, and I felt like a jerk.

Needless to say that was the first and last time I ever did something like that at Costco.
