Paul said that Jesus, "who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." -2 Corinthians 3:6

Paul also said the church is united by the Spirit, not by theology, "For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit." -1 Corinthians 12:13

When we read the scriptures about the first church, it is true that the modern church does not resemble it at all. But we have to go back to "not of the letter but of the Spirit."

If we take the New Testament scriptures and turn them into the Ten Commandments on Stone, we make the same mistake that Jesus came to set us free from. We are "missing the forest for the trees".

The letter kills, the Spirit brings life.

The Spirit is what is at work in modern churches where you find disciples of Jesus. You can see God the Father at work in their hearts.
