Please don't blame yourself. I've never really told anyone this before, but many years ago i planned to take my own life. I'd planned everything out in my head to do it on a particular Wednesday night. On the morning of that Wednesday, my best friend called and told me not to forget that him and a bunch of our friends had made plans to go out for dinner that evening. I thanked him for reminding me, went out and had a lovely night with my friends and then did it the next day instead. Thankfully it didn't quite go to plan and i survived.

As other people have said, someone who wants to do something like that would likely have done it regardless of your actions. Just the fact you called him would have been such a lovely thing for him.
