Which topic or field of study has the most "armchair experts"?

I work in medical research, most real research is funded based on how many lives it can improve, in terms of the severity and how common it is. It creates a situation where we know nothing about some very common ailments just because they are harmless, and we don't know much about some really serious problems just because of how rare they are.

There are some exceptions like if a rich person has a personal interest in the area or if a big company want to sell more product. Bodybuilding is just one of those areas that wont get funded for decent research. It will always be quasi research, smaller student projects or the basic qualification for a nutritionist PhD.

You just don't get the expensive large scale, long term studies that are run by highly qualified people who already have their PhD.
