The worrying classism and lack of compassion toward the poor in this subreddit

I am not trying to defend these original posters, there are already plenty of comments regarding them and their perspective and how this is all comes down to a misunderstanding in communication. Yes they aren't exactly exuding compassion.

But the unfortunate reality is that raising the minimum wage will not solve the problem. If anything it will just make things worse. A basic understanding of modern economics would allow anyone to see that by drastically increasing the minimum wage overnight (effectively doubling it) you will just be increasing the baseline, and eventually the cost of living will follow suit. There is obviously a problem, but this is not the fix. This is like putting a bandaid on a severed limb.

"Westerners" who have fought tooth and nail for their comfortable living and have climbed the "ladder" of socioeconomic standings realize this. Some of them have suffered much more than others and feel entitled to speak their opinions. A few select haven't had it rough at all but still feel entitled. These select few are delusional in their own right, and are most likely a product of their upbringing (which brings its own form of suffering). But they are not speaking out of a place of malice and misanthropy as you may believe. If anything they are speaking from a place of suffering and fear.

"Supporting worker oppression by suggesting people who want to be able to make ends meet are just jealous and that this will just end up harming rich people:"

This is by far the biggest misconstruing of words I've ever read. The comment you were referring to was in all probability talking about small business owners trying to make ends meet. Some businesses start out only being able to pay minimum wage, and that's just an unfortunate side effect of an economy that is disadvantageous for small businesses. What the commenter was trying to get across is that if you were to start a small businesses, you are not guaranteed a minimum wage, no matter how small it is. So for the employees of a business like this to be demanding double the minimum wage and expecting things to run smoothly is delusional.

For larger corporations such as the large fast food joints, there are so many things wrong with them that I wouldn't know where to start. But increasing the minimum wage and effectively increasing the cost of living for everyone else, is just not the way to go, no matter how "compassionate" you may think it is. There are other fixes to this problem, and they need to be worked out, but this is not one of them.
