x-post from r/music - Can any Bjork fans help me out here? Just started listening to Bjork, would like to know album order to go in?

I know I'm late but I just found r/Bjork and I want to make a post before I leave forever

It's ABSOLUTELY about finding songs you really enjoy rather than attempting to like an album. The album has to find you. It takes time to work through them. These are special things, they're like books. They go beyond her as an artist- they are each a beautiful statement. I appreciate things like Selmasongs very much, but her albums are just... irreplaceable.

I became obsessed with the first three songs on "Biophilia" (Being born again with Moon, feeling all alone with Thunderbolt, and the prospect of conquering anxiety in Crystalline.) and from there I spread out. The band Death Grips turned me on to her, and what got me was the difference between how her voice sounds on the "Thunderbolt" remix by them, versus the album version of it. If you enjoy any of the remixes, listen to them extensively and then listen to the original after you get used to it. I think it highlights what is special about her. You have to take your time. Each album is supposed to be its own character. Her facial expressions and the colors on the covers of each album do a really good job of explaining what you are about to hear.

Every album is not only supposed to be different emotionally, but sonically.

Debut = Nervous, excited (a love for House music) Post = Excited. reckless (her most vibrant vocals) Homogenic = Heavy, change (string heavy) Vespertine = Heart, heartbreak (harp heavy) Medulla = Motherhood, power of the voice (only voices) Volta = Triumphant, but tired (horns!) Biophilia = Healing, nature and technology as one (used a video game controller to make lots of the beats) Vulnicura = Vulnerability and its power, divorce (produced by Arca who is absolutely crushing it in 2015 with industrial sounds)

Vespertine is a masterpiece, most people will agree on that being number one.

If someone asked me this question face to face, it would be

Vulnicura (a single listen) Vespertine Biophilia Homogenic Volta Debut Post Medulla

Vulnicura for when you feel powerful despite the forces holding you down (dark room, subwoofer up)

Vespertine for heartbreak (winter walks or the car)

Biophilia for when you feel lost (beautiful places/the night sky make this one explode)

Homogenic for inner power (best through big nice speakers in the morning)

Volta for confidence (headphones)

Post for peace and 20s nostalgia (probably the only album that could be played at a party, and half of it wouldn't work.)

Debut for the greatest stab in the dark I have ever heard (no preference, my least favorite, although I love it, and I think it is her least favorite as well, as she had it repressed in beige.)
