I work for a major company in manufacturing. The job is nasty, dangerous work.

Every month we get a company newsletter. The staff of the newsletter is 11 women, 1 man. The management teams are mostly women. The engineering department is mostly women. There are about 1000 employees working in the plant during the day, and I generally see 1 or 2 women a day working the same jobs. If there's a meeting, however, they are consistently run by women from management. I sat down during a closed door session one time (they assumed I was supposed to be there) and they said things like this (verbatim):

"We are ahead with female engineers but we don't have enough blacks." - "That's good, but we need to hire more. In the future we might require more." - "Blacks we can bring in from the east coast."

HOLY SHIT! They didn't sugar coat any of this! That's how they were talking! I was shocked that a company can be run like that (must be run like that, otherwise they might be sued?)

Oh, and when they asked what I was here for (a job change) I was taken into the hallway. My supervisor (a friend of a friend, of a friend) said to me, "Look... you're a white male. You're basically on the bottom of the list."

To this day, I have no idea if he was joking or being serious. I have no fucking clue what the narrative is anymore.

Do I have a problem with this? NO.

I deal. I adapt, improvise, overcome. There is no other choice. I keep my mouth shut, don't talk about policies or politics. I make money, go home, and refuse to participate in that shit-show. It's a shame those employee involvement teams aren't as effective as they used to be :(
