The whole book stays uncomfortable. It does not get better. I liked the story, the world building, but the characters do not change or grow at all. McSpoilface stays consistently annoying and evil. After getting rescued from multiple big traumas, the sister stays bitchy towards Amber. I loved Amber for a good chunk of the book and then she became frustrating too. She was consistently a doormat to everyone, especially her sister and the only guy she pushes back on is the one guy who is nice to her.

In all the interactions between humans and lizardman, I was fully exasperated on behalf of the lizardman. These people were impossible and he should've ignored what Amber wanted and abandoned them a long time ago.

Every time Meoraq would do the six breath thing for patience, I wanted to do it alongside him. This was not an easy read. I was invested in the story and made myself finish it but goodness it was hard.
