9/11 First Responder - discovers that the medicine she's been paying $120/dose in the USA costs $.05 in CUBA.

Okay, two things:

  • Aaron Sorkin has a liberal basis, not a leftist bias. There is a rather sharp difference there.

  • That shit is so fucking facile it's ridiculous. First of all starting off with the implausible question that, no, you're not even remotely likely to get from today's youth, and people would not be all that shocked by the declaration that someone is not an ultra-nationalist...
But then the answer is also pure bullshit. He cites a bunch of half-truths and misstruths for why we used to be the greatest country, with no real basis. Making laws based upon morality isn't a good thing, killing people because you think they violate your nation's idea of morality usually isn't a good thing, we were even shittier to people in poverty in the past, we, statistically, murdered and raped our neighbors much more often, we beat our chest quite frequently, "acting like men" implies having rigid gender roles, which is a shitty thing generally, we always belittled intelligence, from 1800 on at least anti-intellectual attacks were a routine standard, we did identify by who we voted for in the last election for most of our history, and we have historically scared remarkably easily
Granted, if you take all of Sorkin's bullshit out of it, the statement is basically, "But we did have a booming economy once, which was increased our standard of living." So it needs all of the nonsense fluff.

I like the show on the whole, but it's a bit of a guilty pleasure because, if we're honest, the writing is often pretty stupid. Sorkin's idea of "smart" writing is to have characters speak quickly and cite as many statistics off of the tops of their heads as possible... Which can be an entertaining trick, but it isn't the same thing as actually being smart. That opening was sort of the worst of it.
