According to the Texas Legistaltures page on SB 17, it has passed today's House Committee meeting.

how does this sound?

Senator Ellis,

Greetings. My name is ballsdeepdeepdickin and I am a constituent living in your district. I am writing to you today on behalf of Campus Carry and to express my sentiments on the matter.

Three years ago I moved back to Houston (in your district) after serving four years in the US Air Force. I enrolled into the x university and decided to ride a bicycle the x miles to school everyday to minimize on transportation and parking expenses. After a few days I soon found out how dangerous and vulnerable I was riding on my commute with little means of protecting myself. Between unrestrained dogs chasing me, homeless addicts living under the bridge at x and y street, and bike thefts on the x trail was most unnerving. Staying late at school to study or to work out after the sun went down was simply out of the question due to the inherent danger of riding along the bayou at night through the part of town university is located in.

The current set up for firearms on campus at university is a licensed CHL holder may keep one secured in their car. As a bicyclist working to keep the air a little cleaner and the parking lots a little emptier for my peers, where is someone in my position to stow their firearm when I arrive on campus? Why should I, someone who was trained in my CHL class, trained in the military, someone who practices safe and responsible firearm handling be kept from carrying on a campus? Where does that leave a student who takes the bus everyday without a car to safely leave their firearm in? The simplest and most safe solution in my mind is to just allow students who wish to conceal carry to do so.

The law abiding CHL holder who happens to be a student should be looked upon as an asset to the school and to the surrounding community, not as a liability.

I am asking of you today as my representative to strongly reconsider your position on campus carry and to also encourage your colleagues to vote in favor of campus carry. I am asking you to help embolden the law abiding student on campus and to not leave them as a helpless victim when the need for self protection arises.

Thank you for your time and careful consideration regarding this matter,

ballsdeepdeepdickin
