[Accurist Grand Complication] It's quartz, but it counts!

This is an Accurist Grand Complication. Made in collaboration with the Greenwich Observatory and Citizen (and thus Miyota), this quartz-driven grand complication combines the accuracy of quartz with the charm of mechanical watches and their complications to create a watch with all the features of mechanical grand complications with equal or greater accuracy at a fraction of the price. List of features/complications:

  • quartz movement accurate to +-20s/month (average)
  • hour, minute, subdial seconds and 24-hour clock
  • leap year, month, day, date, and moon phase perpetual calendar
  • 12-hour/30-minute/60-second split-second chronograph with accuracy to 1/4 second
  • minute repeater (electronic tone)
  • hackable seconds
  • two year battery (I know, pointless when the calendar lasts 4 years, but frankly battery tech isn't good enough to last that long yet)
  • 3atm water resistance

So, why did I get this? Frankly, I was looking at mechanical grand complications and decided I didn't want to pay $250k-$620k for a watch. I also wanted the accuracy of quartz, so I Googled 'quartz complication'. Originally I thought it was a stupid idea, but eventually I discovered Shellman, who makes quartz grand complications. Then I found Citizen's Campanola grand complication series. Finally, I found this watch through a forum post. Same movement as the Citizen, but a much cleaner look (IMO) and lower price: $400. $400 is less than I spend on gas per month and as such I thought this was a great deal, so I jumped on it.

Does it replace a 'real' grand complication? Well, the chronograph second hand moves at 4hz, kinda like a mechanical, but the actual seconds hand in the 3 o'clock subdial moves at 1hz like every other quartz. It is quieter than my other mechanicals. It doesn't need to be wound, manually or with an automatic winder, but you do need to replace the battery every two years. Its minute repeater sounds like a cheap Casio's alarm. But, I personally think those are small prices to pay to have a grand complication that doesn't cost as much as one of my cars. And it's the only limited-edition watch I have: number 832 of 2000.
