[Advice] How to craft a proper witch OC without having it blow up in my face

I want to try being more of a witch prior a suggestion and encouragement of the group. Yet I have no clue how to go about making a proper witch character. What spells should I get to optimize my character? Should I try a certain archetype? Any advice you have is appreciated. I don’t want to mess up too bad with this character. Thanks

Some options:

  • Wizard: Gets lots of spells, and can prepare new ones every morning. Can take some time to ritual cast certain spells (cauldron and eye of newt are optional). Gets find familiar, which can give you a pet cat or owl that is an excellent disposable scout and it can use the Help action in combat. Has subclasses that specialize in things like bewitching enchantments, trickery and illusions, body-shaping transmutations, and divining the future. Rather squishy and not great in melee.

  • Sorcerer: Gets very few spells, but is very good at casting them. Can do things like twin buffs and debuffs that are normally single-target, or heighten spells so that enemies make saving throws with disadvantage. Storm bloodline is the most witch-like subclass in the game, it gets the ability to lay some interesting curses on enemies.

  • Warlock: Has one good trick and a handful of other abilities. The eldritch blast cantrip can be paired with always-on invocations that give it damage bonuses, the ability to push or pull enemies, and other things. If you don't like eldritch blast you can also build for melee with blade pact and/or hexblade patron. Gets lots of debuff spells, like hex right out the gate. Subclasses like fey patron give you enchanting magic, illusions, and a powerful social presence.

  • Druid: Nature-y caster. Gets healing spells, and can throw around damage spells and AOE battlefield control. Also gets a smattering of single-target curses and debuffs. Can shapeshift into animals. Subclasses focus more on magic or more on shapeshifting.
