After the recent casting of Ariel for the live action Little Mermaid remake, I made this handy infographic.

It’s like you didn’t even read the post.

Mickey MOUSE has a very defining trait of being a mouse. He’s animated and has looked the way he looks since steamboat. Horrible example.

Batman has a defining trait. He’s a man. It would not make any sense for the Bruce Wayne we know to be a woman. Also, Batgirl already exists and I’m pretty sure Batwoman does too. Horrible example.

Ariel can be black. It really does not make a difference to how she is characterized or how she is treated in the story. There aren’t any plot points of race mattering. She has to be a woman because it’s important to the story; she falls in love with a man, and it’s not what mermaids are supposed to do. The “being different” themes in The Little Mermaid are literally that Ariel is a mermaid, a different thing from a human (shape of water vibes). If Ariel was black, the same themes remain - Ariel, a mermaid, from the ocean, falls in love with land creatures, and romantically with a human man.

Like, bro I think you’re just racist. If you can explain to me how the themes of The little mermaid change significantly due to the character being black, then thad be great. Because “they are classic characters” is really not a great reason. Art is reinterpreted and themes can be reinforced in new ways even in different skins.

Ever heard of Maus? It’s a comic book real people in the Holocaust, but Jews are mice, and Nazis are cats. It’s one of the most compelling graphic novels ever made.

That being said... I don’t know what reason there would be to make Ariel black. Theoretically, there could be some social commentary between a black mermaid and a white human male, in terms of forbidden love. However, Pocahontas already does this pretty well, so a black Ariel would need some really compelling additions to make the change artistically “worth it”.
