He isn't a monster. He just had a different life experience. Not all houses are as warm and cuddly, but that doesn't make them inherently inferior. I never cuddled with any of my siblings ever that I can remember, but I still got along well and enjoyed seeing them regularly.

The only area I think that was done poorly was how he brought it up to his kids. I can easily see how his daughter took it that way and understand he was saying it in an offhanded way to make it seem like no big deal. All in all, he needs to clear up his communication and consider the implications of what he says before he says it.

I don't think there is any malicious intent here.
