Here is an alternate cold war map that I made!

Following the formal end of war in Europe, and the allied liberation of Korea and China, the world plunged into a cold war as the United States and Soviet Union argued over how the post-war world should be set up. Tension and mistrust between the two superpowers intensified, as Germany and Austria were divided.

The Soviet Union refused to withdraw its military from Northern Iran, installing a communist puppet government instead in what would become the People’s Republic of Iran. The legitimate Iranian government would flee to the southern half of Iran and declare a new capital in Isfahan, while Tehran fell to the communists.

In China, the civil war between the Kuomintang and communists has reached a stalemate, with the Communists capturing Manchuria, Beijing, and Northeastern China. By mid-1947, major fighting would start to ease and die out, as the People’s Republic of China was declared in the North, and the Republic of China, with the capital in Nanjing, was declared in the South. Following the end of the civil war, the two nations would slowly begin to rebuild and reconstruct, while trying to exert their influence over their immediate neighbors. As communist forces in Vietnam gained influence, the Republic of China invaded Laos and installed a pro-China government, to counter Vietnam and other potential targets of communism. As the People’s Republic of China built up its military, it grew increasingly concerned about the U.S. presence in the Korean Peninsula, ever since a provisional government was established in the Republic of Korea in 1945. The PRC government calculates that if it invades Korea through the Yalu River, it can establish a northern buffer state and expand Chinese influence throughout the region. It is February 1949, and war is about to break out in East Asia once again.
