I am 17 years old: my mother has 5 credit cards under my name and uses my name/SSN for her bills. How will this affect my future? What can I currently do as a minor?

Wow. I'm very sorry this is happening to you. You need to cut all ties with her as soon as you can. She is what we call a "psychopath" - someone incapable of feeling any empathy for another. You probably need to physically find somewhere else to live as soon as you can. You will need to file a police report and put a freeze on your entire credit. She has done a lot of damage already and it will take a long time for you to methodically dispute the fraudulent records on your credit. I don't have much more specific advice than that except to physically and financially sever yourself from her. Again, that would require a credit freeze with all three credit bureaus and filing a police report. She, unfortunately, needs to be arrested and put in jail.

Believe it or not, you are not alone. This actually reminds me of the bizarre story recently profiled in the Criminal podcast about a young woman who discovered in college that her whole identity had been stolen for years. Since she was a child, multiple credit cards and lines of credit were taken out in her name, ruining her credit history. It became her life mission to find out the person who did this and she even became a professor of consumer finance specializing in identity theft.

After her mother died of cancer, her father called her about some old credit card bills in her name he found in the closet. Eventually, they discovered that it was the mother all along, who stole not only her daughter's identity, but that of her husband and father-in-law. Very disturbing, mysterious story with more interesting details.
