Amazon Prime Air: Drones to carry 5lb packages over 10 miles in 30 minutes

And drones won't weigh thousands of pounds.

Yes, obviously there's potential for drones falling from the sky to cause problems. But risk is a thing that we, as a society, routinely choose to take. And there are a lot of reasons why airborne drones would plausibly far less dangerous than other things we do. Ten pound drone plus 5 five package falling from 400 feet might kill you if it lands on your head, but is unlikely to do significant damage to a building or person in a car. Maybe you'll see some shattered car windows. You're not going to see millions of injuries and thousands of deaths per year

Aside from the vastly less impact force, which...hey, let's do the math.

15 pound object falling from 500 feet. We don't know what it's air resistance is like, which is a huge problem. But let's take teh absolute worst case scenario. But's pretend it's falling in a _vaccum, so there's no air resistence and no terminal velocity. Plugging that into a calculator I get a theoretical maximum speed of 121 miles per hour.

Of course it's going to be less than that.

Oh, and by the way you can completely avoid this problem by adding a parachute to the drone. But hey, let's continue in this ridiculous fantasy scenario of sucking all the air out of the atmosphere and having a drone hit you at maximum possible velocity of 121 mph.

15 pounds, 121 mph, convert units, plug into calculator, I get 356 newtons of force.

Now comparing that to say...a 2742 pound honda civic travelling mt merely freeway speed of 70 mph...we get 38,522 newtons of force. So in your absolute worst case freefall scenario, 15 pounds worth of drone plus cargo carries less than one percent the impact force of a car on the freeway.

Do you see why people are not concerned about this? Yes, it might kill you if it lands on your head. But it's not going to be any more dangerous than that horribly dangerous thing millions of people do every single day when they get in a car. And again, collisions are very likely to happen way less often because 1) parachutes. 2) You don't have to worry about collisions as much because there's less traffic density because in the sky because you have a lot of vertical space to work with. When was the last time you heard about two airplanes crashing into each other? It doesn't happen very often. Whereas cars crash into each other all the time because they're tightly packed into a small space.
